Hachette Livre and the French National Library (BnF) have signed a print-on-demand agreement for the publisher to sell through bookshops out-of-copyright works from the BnF’s online library Gallica.
An initial 15,000 titles have been selected from the 200,000 in Gallica’s catalogue and will be sold from next September. Lightning Source France, a 50-50 joint venture between Hachette Livre and American Lightning Source, will print the titles on-demand. The order-to- delivery time will be the same as for physical books, a joint statement said.
The books will be sold "at a very reasonable price" such as €12 to €15 for a medium sized volume.
