Google is about to launch e-books on the Google Play entertainment portal in France, according to an email sent to publisher partners of Google Livres book search, the French trade publication Livres Hebdo has reported.
The US web giant has invited the partners to sign an amendment to their contracts that would give Google 48% of the price for books sold direct to consumers, and an unspecified share of a 52% margin to be split on sales through retailers. Contracts are to be signed with Google’s European head office in Ireland for tax reasons.
Customers will automatically access Google Play from the site Google eBooks Store and be able to buy Android applications as well as e-books, the email said.
Although no major French publisher has signed up for the French version of Google Book Search, independent houses such as L’Harmattan, Le Petit Futé and Michelin have made several thousand titles available. Hachette Book Group has also signed an agreement to sell its titles through Google Play in the United States.
