The future of the Galaxy British Book Awards is in the hands of a cross-industry steering group, with no event scheduled this spring, though a date for an autumn event is one option being discussed.
Headed by Craig Hillier, W H Smith Travel trading controller, books, the group is "looking at the awards to ensure they do have a place in the industry calendar" according to a spokesperson, with "a sponsor in the picture".
The British Book Awards were founded in 1990 by Publishing News, with the trade awards—British Book Industry Awards—split from the consumer side of the event in 2004. Galaxy has sponsored the consumer awards since 2007.
Publishing News closed its magazine in July 2008, but retained its awards and market research company BML, which was sold earlier this year to Bowker.
The awards were last presented in April 2009, marking their 20th anniversary. Cactus TV, the production company behind "The TV Book Club" broadcast the show on UKTV channel Watch.
The Bookseller took on the British Book Industry Awards late last year and merged it with The Bookseller’s Retail Awards. The first Bookseller Industry Awards take place on 17th May.
