Frontlist revival for Boyars

Independent Marion Boyars is to make a return to frontlist publishing, two years after ceasing new acquisitions.

Publisher Catheryn Kilgarriff has bought US and Canadian rights to Noemi Szecsi's The Finno-Ugrian Vampire, to publish in May 2013, with fellow indie Stork Press publishing in the UK this October.

The difficulty in placing titles into high street promotions following the demise of Borders was a reason cited for the frontlist hiatus. Kilgarriff said: "The downturn in retailing certainly happened, but the corresponding strength in academic sales for our non-fiction, plus online sales, have made up for it. When a book like Noemi's comes along, I knew I could return to publishing new books."

Of the 200 Marion Boyars backlist titles, 30 are now available as e-books. Kilgarriff said Foyles and Daunt Books sold her backlist strongly, with museum and gallery shops also contributing.
