Flammarion signs Amazon deal ahead of Kindle launch

French publisher Flammarion has signed an agreement to sell its electronic titles through Amazon and Apple’s iBookstore.

The publisher is the first in France to sign up with Amazon, just before the Kindle is expected to be launched on the French market. Several other publishers have pacts with Apple, including Hachette Livre, La Martinière and Albin Michel, but they have yet to follow for Amazon.

In a statement sent to French trade publication Livres Hebdo, Flammarion chief executive Teresa Cremisi said the aim was to offer high quality e-books legally. She said: "It is the best way to protect authors’ rights against piracy and to preserve the central place of books in our culture."

Flammarion publishing houses and imprints include Champs, Arthaud, GF, Climats, Autrement Pygmalion, Flammarion Jeunesse, Casterman Jeunesse and Père Castor.

The new agreements are in addition to the joint e-book platform, Eden Livres, which was set up by Flammarion, Gallimard and La Martinière in October 2009. Its role will also be strengthened in centralising and distributing e-books, Flammarion’s digital chief Thierry Capot said.

This raises an interesting question. My UK-registered Kindle is unable to buy titles from the USA; will I be able to buy books in French?
