Penguin Canada executive editor, Nicole Winstanley, has signed a two-book deal for Sum: Forty Tales from the Afterlives and Dethronement by David Eagleman. Sum is to be published in February and will explore funny and unexpected afterlives. Dethronement is scheduled for December and is a non-fiction title about the brain.
Laura Shin, senior editor, has also signed a two-book deal, this time with S J Parris. The first title is Heresy, which will be published in February 2010 and is set in 16th-century England. The second novel is untitled, but is scheduled for February 2011.
Shin has also acquired the rights to The Disciple of the Dog by R Scott Bakker. Bakker previously wrote the Prince of Nothing trilogy and this thriller will is due out in May 2010. The title is about a private investigator who doesn't forget anything, ever.
