Finnish dystopian crime for Harvill Secker

Harvill Secker has acquired a dystopian crime novel by Finnish writer Antti Tuomainen, set in a futuristic Helsinki.

Publishing director Liz Foley bought UK and Commonwealth rights (excluding Canada) to The Healer through Niclas Salomonsson at the Salomonsson Agency.

The story follows struggling poet Tapani Lehtinen, one of the few people left in a Helsinki struggling with ruthless climate change, as he searches for his missing wife, a journalist. Her disappearance seems linked to a story she was researching, about politically-motivated serial killer "The Healer".

Foley said: "We are immensely excited to have acquired The Healer. Following our recent success with Jo Nesbo and Henning Mankell in the bestseller lists we're delighted to welcome a new and original Nordic crime writer to Harvill Secker".

New international deals are already stacking up for the title, which has sold in a pre-empt to Ullstein in Germany and been pre-empted by Bruna in the Netherlands, with a big auction underway in Italy.

The Healer won the Finnish Academy of Crime Writers' Award 2010 for Best Crime Novel of the Year, and Harvill Secker will publish in 2013.
