Self-published title Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire is currently attracting strong international interest through the Intercontinental Literary Agency, which picked up the title as the result of a recommendation by E L James, author of the “mummy porn” hit, Fifty Shades of Grey.
However, McGuire is bucking the trend of bestselling Kindle authors such as Kerry Wilkinson, and is not seeking a publisher in the US or UK as she is already “making a good sum of money” and does not feel she needs a traditional publisher in these territories.
ILA has so far accepted a pre-empt offer from J’ai Lu in France, and from Verus, an imprint of Record in Brazil, as well as a Croatian offer, and “strong interest” in further European territories. McGuire self-publishes the book on the US Kindle store, and has sold more than 140,000 copies at $3.99 since publishing last year.
The book is a romance, featuring college students “good girl” Abby Abernathy and “walking one-night stand” Travis Maddox. As Abby resists Travis’ charms, they make a bet: if he loses, he has to stay abstinent for a month, and if she loses she has to live in his apartment for the same period.
ILA agent Sam Edenborough, representing the title alongside m.d. Nicki Kennedy, said McGuire was not seeking a publisher in English-speaking territories, but she had decided to work with an agent owing to their “specialist skillset and very wide network of relationships around the world”.
