John Green's The Fault in Our Stars (Penguin), the story of two cancer-struck teenagers who meet in a support group and fall in love, has been voted the readers' favourite in W H Smith's Richard and Judy Spring Book Club.
Readers voted which of the 10 titles chosen for the retail promotion they liked best, via the WHS website. Green's novel scored the highest number of votes recorded for a single title, the retailer said.
Green described the result as "really flattering".
Judy Finnigan called The Fault in Our Stars "an emotional novel, which tackles the big issues—life, death and love—yet handles them with care and wit".
Charity Norman's debut After the Fall was the second choice, with Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl third.
Entertainment Weekly has just reported that actress Shailene Woodley has been cast as heroine Hazel in the forthcoming film version of Green's novel.
