The winners of the European Union Prize for Literature have been announced, with one author put forward from each of the 11 selected countries.
This year’s countries included Croatia, Germany, Romania and Spain, selecting authors Mila Pavicevic, Iris Hanika, Razvan Radulescu and Raquel Martínez-Gómez respectively. Over a three-year cycle, national juries in each of the 35 countries participating in the EU Culture Programme nominate the work of an emerging talent.
The aim of the prize is to highlight the wealth of European literature, and each author will be given priority consideration when applying for EU translation grants. In 2011, the UK will be among the countries choosing a winning author, with Turkey, Greece and Serbia also in the line-up. The prize is financed by the Culture Programme of the European Union.
