Elsevier is to expand its support for Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) offered by US provider edX.
The STM publisher has previously piloted textbook content in one edX MOOC, a Circuits and Electronics course taught by Anant Agarwal, who is both edX president and an Elsevier author. Now that is to be expanded to up to five courses, each of which will use an Elsevier text chosen from the publisher's catalogue in computing, engineering, maths, science and criminal justice.
As part of the agreement, edX will provide Elsevier with anonymised usage data that can offer insights into how students are using its content.
Suzanne BeDell, m.d. of Elsevier's Science and Technology Books group, said: "Working with edX is a great way to offer open-access book content, keeping MOOCs widely accessible and supporting better learning and research outcomes . . . Learning how students interact with the material and where within the content they spend our time will help us identify where we should adapt the type of content offered for an improved learning experience."
Agarwal said: "We are very pleased to be using textbooks from Elsevier, a publisher with a long history of producing first-class content."
