Egmont to publish Minecraft encyclopedia

Egmont has revealed plans for Blockopedia, a Minecraft enclopedia that will be released in time for Christmas.

Blockopedia is guide to all the 112 blocks players use to make up the Minecraft world, from basic plants and ores to enchantment tables (which allow players to enchant tools, books and armour). It also includes information about the new blocks in the latest 1.8 version of the game, which was released 2nd September.

The book is hexagonal in shape to reflect the blocks in the game and was written by Alex Wiltshire, former editor of games industry trade magazine Edge.

Sarah Bates, publishing director for licensed character books at Egmont, said Blockopedia is “totally unique”.

She said: “Working closely with Mojang, we wanted to make sure this encyclopaedia was so much more than just an ordinary reference book, so it could truly reflect both the richness of the world and iconic visual identity of the game… this is a truly authoritative and informative companion to Minecraft that has been meticulously designed and beautifully illustrated.”

Lydia Winters, director of fun at game developer Mojang, said the book will give players a “plethora” of new knowledge about the blocks. “The entire game revolves around the blocks you find and create, so it made sense to dig even deeper  into the information about each one.”

Blockopedia will be published 4th December in a black gift box and has an r.r.p. of £30.

Egmont’s Minecraft books have dominated children’s book publishing this year and sales of the four books published so far - The Official Beginner’s Handbook, The Official Redstone Handbook, The Official Construction Handbook and The Official Combat Handbook – totalled £6.6m for the January-August period.
