Egmont will publish Spinderella in October, a story about “Cinderella, football and counting” by Julia Donaldson.
The book was originally issued as part of Egmont’s reading series in 2002, but Donaldson has reworked the text and it will now be released on its picture book list.
Publishing director Melissa Fairley acquired world rights from Caroline Sheldon at the Caroline Sheldon Literary Agency, and hired Sébastien Braun, author/illustrator of I Love My Daddy and I Love My Mummy (Boxer Books), to provide new artwork. Fairley said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be publishing Spinderella, a fantastically funny story that will appeal to all children with its combination of football and fairytale elements.”
Donaldson said she wanted to write something about animals learning maths: “Counting spider’s legs seemed to offer a good way into that idea...and once I came up with a Hairy Godmother, there was no stopping me.”
