Ebury Press has won a four-publisher auction for two books by Bath Novel Award winner Joanna Barnard.
Gillian Green, Ebury Fiction publishing director, bought British Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, to the books from Juliet Mushens at The Agency Group.
The first novel, Precocious, which is Barnard’s debut, deals with “student/teacher relationships, the unreliability of memory and the everyday lies we tell ourselves”.
Barnard won the Bath Novel Award, judged by Mushens, for Precocious.
Green said: “Joanna’s debut is an utterly compelling, clever and controversial novel which the fiction team has become hooked by. It’s that Holy Grail in fiction: quality writing but with a commercial heart and a subject matter ripped straight from the headlines.”
Precocious will be published as a paperback original in August 2015, and a second novel will follow in 2016.
