Ebury Press is moving into the New Adult market with Brazilian author Lilian Carmine, a discovery on writers’ website Wattpad.
Commercial fiction director Gillian Green acquired all rights in three novels direct from the author.
The first title, The Lost Boys, received over 32m reads on Wattpad according to the publisher, and follows a teenage girl who falls in love with a ghost. Ebury Press will publish in October 2013. Brazilian rights have already been bought by Leya.
Green said: "The Ebury team have all fallen for The Lost Boys. Lilian is a wonderful storyteller. The obvious comparisons are to the Twilight saga but Lilian’s writing is sweet and romantic and has a charm all of its own."
Green has also bought British Commonwealth rights in three novels by Cora Carmack, including Losing It from New Leaf via Kate Mclennan at Abner Stein. Originally self-published, the novel sold over 32,000 copies in one week, according to the publisher. US rights have been bought at auction by HarperCollins US.
"Losing It, is the perfect antidote to Fifty Shades of Grey," said Green. "It’s a novel about a young student wanting to lose her virginity by more conventional means than a kinky contract. It’s a funny, charming love story which will appeal to female readers of all ages. We’re delighted to have both Cora and Lilian on the Ebury Press list for next year."
Losing It is published in March, with Faking It to follow in June.
