Interest in e-books has sharply increased during the past year, with internet searches doubling in 12 months, according to research agency Hitwise.
The iLiad became the first e-book device to go on sale in the United Kingdom in May. Speculation that the Amazon Kindle will go on sale in the United Kingdom has been building in recent months. However, according to the number of internet searches, it is the Sony Reader that is the most popular device.
Hitwise research director Robin Goad said: "Interest has been building since September 2008 and there were peaks in November and December in the build up to Christmas. Interestingly, relative to population, the market share of searches for the ‘kindle’ in the US is the almost the same as the market share of searches in UK for the ‘sony reader’.
