Dylan Jones to write Bowie title for Preface
04.04.12 | Charlotte Williams
Preface has acquired a "celebration" of music icon David Bowie by GQ editor Dylan Jones, which acts as a biography of a particular moment in his career, when he first appeared as Ziggy Stardust on "Top of the Pops".
Publisher Trevor Dolby bought world rights to When Ziggy Played Guitar—David Bowie and Four Minutes that Shook the World by Jones from Ed Victor.
Dolby said the idea for the book came out of a conversation he and Dylan, long-time friends, had had, discussing the most memorable moments of their youth. Dylan said his was 6th July 1972 at 7.25 p.m., at which point, Dolby said: "I leapt from my seat, 'David Bowie sings Starman on 'TOTP'!' I shouted, and When Ziggy Played Guitar was born."
Dylan will talk about the impact of Bowie's performance, both in terms its importance as a cultural turning point and of Dylan's own life growing up. The book will be published in hardback on 28th June, ahead of the 40th anniversary of the performance's broadcast on 6th July.
