Authors Roddy Doyle and Fintan O'Toole were among the winners at last night's (26th November) Bord Gáis Energy Irish Book Awards 2013.
The eighth annual awards, held at The Double Tree by Hilton Hotel in Dublin, also honoured novelist John Banville with the Bob Hughes Lifetime Achievement Award, which was presented by actress Sinéad Cusack.
Doyle's book The Guts (Jonathan Cape) was named the Eason Novel of the Year, while A History of Ireland in 100 Objects (Royal Irish Academy) by O'Toole won the Books Are My Bag Best Irish-published Book of the Year. The writing.ie Short Story of the Year award went to The Things We Lose The Things We Leave Behind by Billy O’Callaghan (New Island Books).
Seven Deadly Sins: My Pursuit of Lance Armstrong (Simon & Schuster), the book by journalist David Walsh about the disgraced cyclist, was named RTÉ Television Sports Book of the Year. The Clifden Bookshop in Clifden, Co. Galway, was named Bord Gáis Energy Bookshop of the Year.
A tribute to the late Seamus Heaney was screened during the ceremony, which featured accolades from former US President Bill Clinton and Edna O' Brien.
The awards, which were hosted by television channel RTE's Keelin Shanley and John Murray, are the biggest celebration of Irish books and authors and the only event of its kind in Ireland. Highlights of the awards will be shown on on RTÉ One on Saturday 30th November.
