Doncaster campaigners look to judicial review

Doncaster campaigners are considering applying for judicial review over library closures, following approval by the council's cabinet yesterday (23rd November) of plans to close two of the borough's libraries and hand a further 12 over to communities to run.

Lauren Smith of Save Doncaster Libraries said she was "disgusted but not surprised" by the decision, which comes after a long campaign. "We are speaking to law firms about the possibility of judicial review because we believe they will be in breach of equalities legislation by creating a two-tier service," Smith said.

Campaigners are also asking the council to hold off from closing any libraries until after the inquiry to be held by the Culture, Media and Sport select committee early next year.

"If the inquiry finds that the cuts are detrimental to society, by the time that is decided, the damage will have been done in Doncaster [if the closures go ahead]," she said.
