"Distinctive" short stories to Chatto
12.03.12 | Charlotte Williams
Chatto & Windus has acquired a collection of short stories by Nigerian author A Igoni Barrett.
Editor Parisa Ebrahimi bought UK and Commonwealth rights in the collection, entitled Love is Power, or Something Like That, through James Pullen at the Wylie Agency, with plans to publish in June 2013. Graywolf Press will be publishing the title in the US in 2013.
Ebrahimi said: "Short stories of this originality and range don't come along very often. This is a phenomenal collection from a palpably talented young writer . . . these tales are all marred with a dark edge, in writing that is tough, surprising, vigorous and immediately distinctive."
Barrett lives in Lagos, and won the 2005 BBC World Service short story competition, as well as a Chinua Achebe Center Fellowship, a Norman Mailer Center Fellowship and a Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center Residency.

It's on my reading list. I haven't read anything from African authors.
