Date given for Brent libraries appeal

The appeal hearing into the closure of six Brent libraries is scheduled to take place next week.

A start date of 10th November has been listed for the hearing, which will take place at the Court of Appeal at the Royal Courts of Justice in London, with proceedings expected to continue into the following day.

Local residents are seeking to overturn a judicial review judgement given earlier this month that Brent council's decision to close the libraries was not unlawful. The appeal is being treated as an "expedited hearing", with the minimum of delay.

An injunction has been obtained by residents to prevent the boarding up of Kensal Rise Library, and the removal of books and computers from the other libraries closed by Brent council, until the appeal judge makes his decision.

The Brent SOS Libraries campaign, run by local residents keen to keep the libraries open, said it was preparing to be asked for a further "community contribution" towards costs by  the Legal Services Commission, which administers legal aid. Residents have already raised in excess of £30,000 to fund the cost of a legal challenge to the closures.
