Dan Shepherd new deputy m.d. at HCB

Hachette Children's Books has appointed Penguin group sales director Dan Shepherd to the newly created role of deputy managing director, a "pivotal moment" for the company's development according to managing director Marlene Johnson.

Shepherd will report directly to Johnson, joining the company on 1st May. He has been at Penguin for 11 years, joining the production department of Dorling Kindersley and then moving to Penguin sales in 2003. In 2009, he became children's sales director and is currently the deputy group sales director with responsibility for children's sales, special sales and direct sales channels.

Johnson said: "This is an exciting time for children's publishers and we have great plans for our business. We are at a pivotal moment in our development and I am so pleased to have found, in Dan, a deputy with a breadth of publishing experience, particularly in building major properties.

"His appointment will enable us to deliver our sales, marketing and digital strategies more effectively."

Shepherd added: "I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to take on the new role . . . I have had a fantastic time at Penguin over the last 11 years but now feels exactly the right time to be taking on the new challenge."
