Cutbacks to Durham library service

Over 130 full-time equivalent library jobs are under threat after Durham county council unveiled plans for major cuts to opening hours.

According to a report in the Northern Echo, the council has announced plans to cut opening hours to 36 a week at 11 town centre libraries and just 20 a week at 28 community libraries, in a bid to save £1.5m. The mobile library service will also be cut. According to the council's own calculations, 250 staff, the equivalent of 134 full-time posts, could be affected by the changes.

Durham County Council is also contemplating outsourcing the management of its 39 libraries—as well as some leisure centres, theatres and museums—to a non-profit-making trust.

Options are to be discussed at County Hall next week (25th January).
