Anthony Cheetham is to head up a new international contract co-edition imprint at Atlantic, with 24 titles planned for publication this autumn.
Named Callisto, the imprint will lead with The Rose, a history of the plant by Jennifer Potter, which will launch at Waterstone's in October, priced £15. The following 12 months will see the publication of "high concept" non-fiction titles tackling subjects across science, maths, philosophy, religion, language, history, travel and society.
Atlantic chief executive Toby Mundy said the aim was "to commission and develop a substantial bank of intellectual property which we can offer to customers in a variety of formats, both print and electronic, in all the major book markets around the world".
Callisto titles will be initially offered to contract customers—such as a large retailer—which have committed to "a bulk quantity in exchange for an agreed period of exclusivity in their territory", allowing Atlantic to cover the costs of publication. They will also be published in standard trade editions under the Atlantic imprint when the period of exclusivity comes to an end.
Backing Cheetham on the imprint will be Atlantic's non-fiction publishing director Richard Milbank and editor Sarah Norman. Milbank said the trio had been "commissioning energetically" on the programme since last autumn.
He added: "Anthony and I both worked previously on Quercus's contract publishing programme, and we're using that experience to create a subtly different publishing model here at Atlantic, one that is more fully suited to the UK environment."
