Chatto editor Juliet Brooke has bought Damn His Blood, a true crime story set in rural Georgian England by first-time writer Peter Moore.
Brooke acquired UK and Commonwealth rights at auction from Annabel Merullo at PFD. The book describes the murder of a village parson in 1806, a crime which became a national sensation in the period before Robert Peel introduced the police force and is said to combine true crime with "expertly researched" social history.
Brooke said, ‘We’re talking Mr Whicher in a smock! It’s a gripping tale of murder and intrigue packed with grisly details, which also brings an unfamiliar period of English history brilliantly to life. It’s very exciting to welcome Peter to Chatto. He is a young literary historian with a great future ahead of him.’
Chatto plan to publish on 21st June 2012, to coincide with the anniversary of the parson’s murder.
