Canongate has released an iPad exclusive digital book by its science author David Eagleman.
Priced £4.99, Why the Net Matters explores how the invention and use of the internet affects the long-term success or failure of our civilisation. The app offers readers random access chapters, the option to ‘zoom out’ to check their current position within the text, to ‘drill down’ into key terms and concepts covered in the text, and view interactive 3D figures- a ‘one-click’ function enables users to sweep away the text and concentrate on the images.
Dan Franklin, digital editor at Canongate, said: "Now that digital reading is accepted and growing more commonplace it’s important that digital futurists don’t run off and leave the average reader standing. I think what we’ve developed with David is a big step forward, offering a tailor-made experience for the iPad...without losing the reader in the process. This was a case of taking an exciting piece of technology, the iPad, and innovating on it to best express the subject matter."
The app was created by digital company Popleaf. Eagleman previously wrote Sum for Canongate.
