Canongate nets Ness

Canongate has acquired the first adult novel written by Patrick Ness since 2003, with editorial director Francis Bickmore pre-empting world English rights from Michelle Kass.

Canongate will publish The Crane Wife as a lead fiction title in early summer 2013. It is Ness' third book for adults, following The Crash of Hennington, a novel, and a collection of short stories, Topics About Which I Know Nothing.

Bickmore described it as “an enchanting tale of how loneliness can be transformed by the disruptive and redemptive power of love.” He added: "Patrick has been building a considerable fanbase for his young adult books for years. With his profile rising higher and higher, and movie developments taking interesting turns, this is the perfect time for Patrick's distinctive writing to reach a whole new audience."

Ness has written seven books, including the Chaos Walking trilogy which, among them, have won the Carnegie Medal, the Guardian Children's Ficiton Prize, and the Costa Award. His last book, A Monster Calls (Walker), is his fourth title in a row to be shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal.
