Canongate buys stories by US marine

Canongate has bought a collection of stories by a US marine and veteran of the Iraq war.

Senior editor Francis Bickmore pre-empted UK and Commonwealth rights to the untitled collection by Phil Klay through by Cathryn Summerhayes at WME on behalf of Eric Simonoff. US rights were pre-empted by Scott Moyers and Andrea Walker at Penguin US.

Canongate and Penguin will publish in 2013.

Bickmore said: "In jaw-droppingly direct, Carver-esque prose Klay examines the grim, exhilarating, and profoundly disturbing experiences of ordinary American soldiers serving in Iraq. I've not read a better portrait of the human cost of war. These stories take you right into the heart of battle, and into the hearts of a group of young soldiers and their families.

"Fans of 'Jarhead', Matterhorn, 'Generation Kill' and 'The Hurt Locker' have a treat in store."

another short story collection. one from quercus and one from canongate. all hail the short story.

Out of curiosity When Bickmore says "Carver-esque prose" - is that pre- or post-mortem Gordon Lish's editing? After all, there are completely different types of writing style between the two, as anyone will attest who's read Carver's fiction before the "definitive/untouched-by-Lish's-red-pen" Library of America edition.

Library of America (interview with Tess Gallagher, Carver's wife - I hate using the word widow, and the LOA volume editors William L. Stull and Maureen P. Carroll): http://bit.ly/q52QNU

Compared with this view/story:

A fascinating article by Gaby Wood two years ago in The Guardian about the controversy of Lish's influence/editing/change of Carver's published work: http://bit.ly/n8gsWN
