Canongate and Mr B collaborate over hardback
17.09.12 | Benedicte Page
Canongate and Bath independent Mr B's are co-publishing a hardback of novel The Howling Miller by Finnish writer Arto Paasilinna, translated by Will Hobson, it was announced at the Booksellers Association conference this afternoon (17th).
Mr B's has sold over 200 copies of the book in its Canongate paperback in recent years. The new 300-copy print run hardback, the book's first hardback edition, was bought firm sale by the bookshop. Mr B's manager Nic Bottomley and his team chose a jacket design from a local artist and wrote the blurb, and a personal description of why the bookshop team loved the book. Canongate handled the production.
Canongate chief Jamie Byng said the edition had come about following a buddying link-up between the publishing house and the bookshop as part of the BA/PA shadowing scheme. "We did this not for financial reasons but as a blueprint of doing something exciting in partnership with a bookshop," he said.
Bottomley said: "We will sell this hardback to all the people of Bath and we hope it will boost sales for Canongate's paperback too."
The announcement came as part of a presentation on collaborations within the book trade.
