Canongate acquires Grimwood literary novel
29.06.12 | Charlotte Williams
Canongate has acquired the first literary novel by Jonathan Grimwood.
The author has previously written historical fantasy novels under the name Jon Courtenay Grimwood.
Editorial director Francis Bickmore bought world rights in The Last Banquet, set in 18th-century France, from Jonny Geller at Curtis Brown. The story follows the life of Jean-Marie Charles d'Aumout, an orphan, military cadet, Enlightenment hero and chef.
Bickmore said: "This gripping, bawdy, gluttonous tale is punctuated by recipes cooked by our hero, ranging from Three Snake Bouillabaisse to Wolf's Heart Pickle. Grimwood is brilliant at conjuring the smells, tastes and sensations of this most colourful historical period. People are going to want to devour this novel."
Canongate will publish in summer 2013.
