Burchill’s 80s bonkbuster set for reprint
20.11.12 | Joshua Farrington
Atlantic imprint Corvus is set to republish a 1980s “bonkbuster” by controversial journalist Julie Burchill.
Ambition, first published in 1989 by Corgi, tells the tale of Susan Street, a tabloid deputy editor desperate to be promoted to the top job, and willing to do whatever the proprietor Tobias Pope says to get it.
Atlantic editor-in-chief Ravi Mirchandani bought the UK and Commonweath rights from Robert Caskie at PFD, with plans to publish in May 2013.
He said: “I read Ambition well over half a dozen times back in the 90s, so much so that I know bits of it almost off by heart. And it still seems as hilarious and as outrageous as it did back then, so refreshingly different from the tweeness and humourlessness of today’s ‘mommy-porn’. I’m delighted that we have the opportunity to publish the book.”
Burchill said: “Writing Ambition was one of the most pleasurable and profitable acts of my long and lurid career. And even now, it makes Fifty Shades of Grey look like Anne of Green Gables.”
