Borders Group in the US has launched a new audiobooks download service, Borders Audiobook Downloads, on Borders.com, offering an initial 15,000 titles.
The titles include fiction, non-fiction, bestsellers, classics, and others. Each week, new titles will be added to the online catalogue to augment the selection of audiobooks on CD available in stores and online.
At launch on Monday (14th July), more than 5,000 of the listed titles were available in MP3 format. To promote the new service, the retailer is offering Jon Krakauer's Into the Wild as a free download until 19th July. In addition, 15 titles, ranging from William Golding's Lord of the Flies to Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Barack Obama's The Audacity of Hope, are being offered at a discounted price of $9.95 to 22nd July.
Borders is also introducing a download service in its new concept stores via self-serve computer stations. It currently has 10 of the new stores and aims to have 14 nationwide by the end of 2008.
Kevin Ertell, senior vice president of e-business for Borders Group, said: “We are giving customers what no other book retailer does—the ability to enjoy this great form of entertainment in a variety of formats including the universally compatible MP3 format.
