The Bookseller launches Christmas Trading Survey
21.12.11 | Benedicte Page
The Bookseller is launching its annual survey of how independent bookshops have fared with trading this Christmas.
This year we are asking how sales held up, what the surprise hits were, whether bookshops suffered any supply and delivery problems, and whether publishers are doing enough to help independent booksellers with their business.
The results of the survey will run in early January. To contribute, please fill in our short questionnaire before Monday 2nd January.

Will the results of this be in the subscription section or public? As an aside, I know the piece on the chart results is kept locked away but it would be 'nice' to have another story available for us meer mortals to comment on. After all, the figures are freely given by the hundrens of bookshops around the country providing their data.
Hi Nerd
Most of our news stories are still freely available to be read and commented on, by all mortals. Only our exclusive and premium content will be subscriber-only.
As for the indie survey story, I'm not sure yet whether this will be subscriber-only. Independents will be helping us, but the story will also involve a lot of work and research at our end so it's not simply a matter of posting up "data".
Thanks, Katie Allen
I don't doubt that you will have to put some work into the subsequent story and that The Bookseller needs to pay bills, I just think you need to be upfront with the people who may spend a considerable amount of time filling in forms (it's not like it's a couple of Yes/No's) as to whether they will be able to see the results. Otherwise, what's the point?
I will not complete the survey untill we have a clear statement that the results will be available to all. Why should I waste my time?
Nerd, Marsdalebear - having spoken to our editor, the story will be subscriber-only. Many of our respondents will be subscribers already.
However, anyone who completes the survey but who is not a subscriber will be able to receive the story via email, if they so wish. Thanks, Katie
Good, new story please !
It will be interesting to find out the results for the survey, as very often people think that stuff like which book was most popular during the holidays are predictable but it turns out otherwise.
