The shortlist for the Man Asian Literary Prize was announced today (9th January) with two books tipped for the Man Booker prize rmaking it onto the five-strong list.
The Garden of Evening Mists by Tan Twan Eng (Myrmidon) and Narcopolis by Jeet Thayil (Faber), which both made the shortlist of the Man Booker prize in 2012, are in the running for the Man Asian prize, with Between Clay and Dust by Musharraf Ali Farooqi, The Briefcase by Hiromi Kawakami (Counterpoint) and Silent House by Orhan Pamuk (Faber) completing the shortlist.
Professor David Parker, executive director of the Asian Literary Prize, said: "Several of these writers have been celebrated in their own countries and recognised internationally, but never before have we viewed them collectively as Asian writers."
The winner of the $30,000 (£19,000) prize will be announced on 14th March 2013, with the translator, if any, receiving $5,000 (£3,122). In late April 2013, an announcement will also be made about the new title sponsor for the prize, as the current sponsor Man Group will be relinquishing its title sponsorship following this year's prize.
Spokesman Harrison Kelly said: "Since October we have been contacted by several Asian-based and global corporations about sponsoring the Prize. In fact we are currently in encouraging talks with potential partners. Of course these things take time and we are yet to finalise anything, but we are thrilled that so many people value the Prize as much as we do and see sponsoring us as a unique opportunity to create a stronger presence throughout Asia."
