The Book Trade Charity, BTBS, will organise a fund-raising week next June, replacing its previous main event, the Walkies.
Held from 7th June to 11th June next year, publishers and retailers will be encouraged to run their own events for BTBS funds, from quizzes to book sales and fun-runs. The fundraising target is £25,000 from the week, provisionally tagged the Book Trade Charity Action Week.
The week was announced by BTBS chairman Jo Henry at a launch in central London, attended by representatives of major publishers and the heads of the BA and the PA, Tim Godfray and Simon Juden. Henry appealed for the trade to come forward with ideas for events and activities.
The charity is facing increased demand for its services and its grants as the recession bites, at the same time that potential donors are themselves feeling the squeeze. Some major players in the trade fail to help the charity at all.
Currently the charity helps around 100 individuals with grants, dispensing some £100,000 a year. It also maintains a residential retreat at Kings Langley.
