Sainsbury's has revealed volume and value book sales at the supermarket increased by 35% during its last trading quarter.
The sales growth, for the 12 weeks to 12th June, outstrips that of the wider business. Last week, the supermarket revealed for the same period, like for like sales only increased by 0.3% once the temporary cut in VAT was factored in. Total sales, excluding fuel, increased by 4.4%.
Among the titles it identified as performing particularly well were Jamie Oliver's Jamie Does (Michael Joseph), which Sainsbury's said it had a 42% market share in its first week of sale and 54% in week two. It also highlighted Karin Slaughter's Genesis (Arrow), with an average 15% market share over the period, and Michael Connolly's Scarecrow (Orion), with a 17% average.
The supermarket launched its Summer Reading campaign last week, with standalone shipper units in all of the 430 stores that sell books. Titles such as James Patterson's I, Alex Cross (Century), Terry Pratchett's Unseen Academicals (Transworld) and Sam Bourne's The Chosen One (Harper) are promoted outside of the book aisle on the shipper and are part of its 2 for £7 campaign.
