Bob Miller, the president of HarperStudio, the HarperCollins US imprint that operated a profit share model with authors, is leaving the business. Miller will join US indie Workman Publishing as group publisher from 3rd May 2010. Miller said he was joining "one of our country's most innovative and successful independent publishers".
Miller joined HarperCollins in April 2008 to spearhead the imprint, which also operates on a firm sale basis. The imprint will continue under Michael Morrison, president and publisher of US General Books and Canada.
In a memo to staff, HarperCollins chief executive Brian Murray said: "I regret to inform you that Bob Miller will be stepping down after two years as the President and Publisher of HarperStudio to pursue a new opportunity. At a time of great change in publishing, Bob built HarperStudio into a new innovative publishing imprint based on profit shares with authors and non returnable book sales with retailers. It was recently named one of the most innovative companies by Fast Company magazine."
Miller said: "I am very proud of what we have accomplished at HarperStudio, and I am sorry to leave this exciting venture behind, but the opportunity to play such a significant role at Workman Publishing is impossible to resist. I have admired Peter Workman and his company from afar throughout my career; now I look forward to working closely with him as Workman Publishing enters its fifth decade as one of our country's most innovative and successful independent publishers."
Peter Workman continues as president and chief executive. He said: "I've reached a time in my life when I need to look to the future of the company and to make changes."
