Barnes & Noble is offering the Nook Simple Touch e-reader for £29 for a limited period in an attempt to boost its UK footprint.
The price point, down from £79, beats the Amazon Kindle and Kobo equivalent by around £20-30, and will be offered through all partner retailers including Foyles, Blackwell's, John Lewis, Argos, Sainsbury's and Asda. The Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight is also being reduced to £69 from £109.
B&N has also announced that it is linking up with the London Evening Standard to donate 1,000 e-readers to the national literacy charity Beanstalk as part of the newspaper's Get London Reading campaign. Beanstalk recruits, vets, trains and supports volunteers in schools. The charity will use Nook e-readers to increase access to digital books in some schools with high levels of illiteracy.
Jim Hilt, managing director of Barnes & Noble [pictured with children from Sacred Heart School, Battersea] said: "Literacy is at the heart of everything we do. We have a passion for everyone to experience digital reading affordably, anytime and anywhere. It was a perfect fit when we had the opportunity to partner on the Get London Reading campaign. We hope to further enrich the minds of readers of all ages across the UK and give them affordable access to the books they love."
B&N launched its range of Nook e-readers in the UK last September through partner retailers, followed by an advertising campaign in the run-up to Christmas.
