Academic retailer Blackwell is launching an "online e-book store" next week, which will offer customers access to more than 45,000 e-books. At the beginning of August, the company will also follow Waterstone's and Borders and bring another e-reading device to the UK market. The Dutch-built BeBook reader will retail for £199 and be available to purchase in Blackwell stores.
Kamiel Keeris, m.d. for BeBook, said "The presence of BeBook e-readers in the Blackwell stores offers exceptional visibility to the BeBook throughout the UK and marks a significant first step in the presence of the product on the consumer mass market."
Jessica Armishaw, head of online for Blackwell, added: "We're excited to be able to offer our customers the ability to buy e-books. Academic publishers have been quick to embrace this new technology and as such the number of academic titles available for customers is impressive and perfectly compliments our instore and online offer, while the number of trade titles is growing daily we expect our e-books sales to grow significantly over the coming months."
The e-books will be available in file formats "for all major e-book readers currently available, including Adobe PDF and epub versions," the retailer said.
Blackwell has followed Borders UK in partnering with Gardners to make the range available via the distributor's digital warehouse. Bob Jackson, commercial director at Gardners said: "With 45,000 titles available today and UK publishers increasingly creating digital books alongside their physical books the range of books available will grow considerably and quickly."
