Bennett to hold Brent library fundraiser

Alan Bennett is to hold a fundraiser to help fund the legal campaign against the Brent library closures.

Residents of Brent sent a legal letter to the council's legal director on Friday (6th May). It argues the council's move to set a budget in February based on the closure of six libraries was unlawful, as the consultation period on the closures did not end until 4th March. Other legal actions are being brought in Gloucestershire, Somerset, Lewisham and the Isle of Wight.

Bennett will hold a fundraiser on 24th May at St Martin's Church in Kensal Green. The author and playwright will give a speech on library closures, read from his works, sign books and take part in a question and answer session with local author Tim Lott.

Lott said: "We fully understand the need for cuts to be made. This is not a head in the sand campaign. However, local residents have campaigned to run Kensal Rise library on a partly voluntary and possibly self-funded basis, but have met with only indifference and stonewalling from Brent who have offered no practical help, assistance or encouragement.”

Sorry Tim Lott but some of us don't "fully understand the need for cuts to be made" and have not got our heads in the sand! Some of us see pay rises and bonuses in the city and have seen the latest 'sunday times rich list', and some of us believe that the cuts are being made for ideoligical reasons?
Good luck with your legal challenge and I sincerely hope that you manage to save Kensal Green library, but only if it is local authority funded and staffed with professional and knowledgeable library staff, you know what they say "A Library Without a Librarian is Just a Room Full of Books"
