Beatles lyrics explored in new deal for W&N
01.01.70 | Katie Allen
Weidenfeld & Nicolson has acquired The Beatles Lyrics: The Unseen Story, edited by Hunter Davies, telling the story of the legendary band’s music through the original manuscripts—sometimes written on the backs of envelopes or scraps of paper—of their lyrics.
Non-fiction publisher Alan Samson bought world rights from Robert Kirby of United Agents in the title, with plans to publish in hardback in September 2014.
The book aims to give a "unique insight into the creative process of Lennon and McCartney, how they did it, what they were thinking, how they changed their minds, and then came up with the words we all know". Davies has sought out nearly one hundred Beatles lyrics, and will put each song in chronological order and in context, in terms of what the Beatles were doing at the time, how and when they came to write and record the song, and how the original version differs from the final one.
Samson said: "This visually arresting book places the reader at first hand with lyrical genius. It will enthrall Beatles fans and music-lovers everywhere."
Davies is the author of the only authorised biography of the Beatles, and is the editor of The John Lennon Letters which has just been released by W&N.
