Banville to bring back Chandler
08.08.12 | Bookseller Staff
Raymond Chandler is the latest classic author to have a current writer take on his mantle, with novelist John Banville to write a new novel featuring his fictional LA detective, Philip Marlowe.
US Macmillan imprint Henry Holt will publish the book in 2013, with Banville writing under his crime fiction pen name, Benjamin Black.
According to reports, Banville said he will create a "slightly surreal, or hyper-real, atmosphere", and will also bring back the character of policeman Bernie Ohls. The book will be set in the 1940s and have an original plot, with the setting to be Bay City, Chandler's fictional stand-in for Santa Monica, California.
The Independent reports that the deal has been authorised by Chandler’s estate.
There has so far been no announcement about the book's publication in the UK, where Banville is published by Pan Macmillan and Penguin.
