A bidding war between two publishers over a debut novel has seen Atlantic Books editor Sarah Castleton secure world English rights for a "good five-figure" sum.
The novel Hemispheres, written by archaeologist Steve Baker, follows a Falklands deserter on an Odyssey-style adventure as he attempts to return to his wife and son in Teeside after three years' absence. Susan Armstrong, junior agent at Conville & Walsh, helped broker the deal.
She said Baker had finally been swayed by Castleton's belief in the book. "She is a sensitive and competent editor, and although it is a fairly small team, we know them well and they are all behind the book," she added.
Publication has been tipped for spring 2010.
