Atlantic buys Harrington memoir
01.01.70 | Katie Allen
Atlantic Books publishing director Margaret Stead has bought an "heroic" memoir by journalist Suzanne Harrington in which she recounts to her children how their father came to commit suicide.
Stead bought UK and Commonwealth (including Canada) rights in The Liberty Tree from Becky Thomas at WME, to publish in July 2013. Stead said: "From the very first lines of this powerful memoir, I was hooked. Suzanne is by turns poignant, angry, exasperating and killingly funny. Her life has been the stuff of fiction, yet at the same time aspects of it are all too familiar . . .
"This is a book of staggering, heroic honesty. We have had an incredible reaction to it here at Atlantic. No one—men and women alike—who picked it up has been able to put it down."
Harrington, based in Brighton, writes for the Irish Examiner and Irish Independent. The Liberty Tree is her first book.
