App download surge on Christmas Day

The number of apps downloaded on Google and Apple surged 125% worldwide to 242m on Christmas Day, with Apple's iBooks app in sixth position on its free downloads chart, The Guardian reports. On Christmas Eve, 150m apps were installed across the two systems.

The surge in app downloads came as 6.8m phone activations were made on Apple and Android devices on the 25th December.

Google mobile senior vice-president Andy Rubin told Twitter followers that around 3.7m devices using Google's Android operating software were switched on for the first time on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Android had previously been averaging 700,000 new users a day.

Gaming apps such as Grand Theft Auto II and Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog dominate the Android paid-for download chart. However those wanting to read books on their iPad pushed Apple's iBooks app into sixth highest place among its free downloads.

"Clearly the late sales boost on prior weeks is linked to how the calendar fell for shopping this year, as well as the temporary cessation of the ever increasing proportion of sales through the internet. Thus as the constant swing against retail grows, the percentage increase in retail in the final week will grow , as the swing comes back temporarily. So be prepared for annual ""greatest ever swing to retail," headlines in the future ."
