Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Anne Tyler’s new book A Spool of Blue Thread will be published by Chatto in spring 2015.
Set in Tyler’s hometown of Baltimore, the book begins in the present day and unwinds through three generations of the Whitshank family.
The novel opens when social worker Abby and construction worker Red receive a call from their son, who has phoned with important news. Then, suddenly, the phone goes dead.
Tyler’s UK editor Becky Hardie of Chatto & Windus said: “No one sees family as clearly as Anne Tyler does.
“The Whitshanks are one of her finest creations, they are people we instantly know and recognise – perhaps even from our own family.
“Through their story Anne Tyler shows us how over the years each family creates its own myths, decides how to present itself to the world. It’s also one of those novels you never want to end.”
Chatto has published Tyler since her first novel, If Morning Ever Comes, was released in 1965.
Tyler was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Literature for her novel Breathing Lessons in 1989, and in 2012 she was given The Sunday Times Award for Literary Excellence, which recognises a lifetime’s achievement in books.
