Angry Robot finds deals through Open Door
01.01.70 | Graeme Neill
Angry Robot is to publish titles by two debut authors following its "Open Door Month", in which un-agented authors could submit their works directly to the publisher.
Editor Lee Harris negotiated both deals, each for world rights and a minimum of two books, directly with the authors. Harris signed the first deal with Cassandra Rose Clarke for her books The Mad Scientist's Daughter and The Assassin's Curse.
The Mad Scientist's Daughter is described as "the heartbreaking story of the journey from childhood to adulthood, with an intriguing science-fictional twist". The Assassin's Curse is billed as "a fantastical romp, starring Ananna, a non-nonsense lady pirate, born into pirate royalty".
In his second deal, Harris bought The Dead of Winter and She Returns from War by Lee Collins, with both novels following Cora Oglesby, a bounty hunter famed for working on supernatural cases.
Harris said: "There is an enormous amount of talent out there, waiting to be discovered, and I am thrilled we have found two great new talents as part of our search." The publisher received more than 990 novels during March and has plans to run a similar period in spring 2013.
