Amazon to open Japan Appstore

Amazon is to open an App Store in Japan later this year, and has invited developers to submit content for distribution in that country.

The online retailer said it had opened its mobile portal to app and game producers looking to reach Japanese customers, calling it an “important milestone” in the company’s expansion. Amazon opened its app zone in the UK and other countries in Europe such as Germany, France, Italy and Spain this summer.

Jim Adkins, vice-president of the Amazon App Store, said: “Many of our existing developers are anxious to localise their apps and games for Japanese consumers, and we look forward to working with new developers that have been waiting for a chance to bring their Japanese content to the Amazon platform."

The Amazon App Store offers features such as “Free App of the Day”. Developers have been told that they can sign up to the Amazon mobile app distribution portal and that for new developers, the App Store will waive all first year programme fees.
