Amazon has continued price-matching against Nook's "Hot Summer Books" offer. The retailers are pricing frontlist titles at 99p in a move dubbed "madness" by one independent bookseller.
Amazon is now price-matching titles including TransAtlantic by Colum McMann (Bloomsbury) and the Man Booker-winning Bring Up The Bodies by Hilary Mantel (HarperCollins), alongside a host of other books.
Several of the books being sold at 99p for the Nook are now charting in the top 20 of the Amazon Kindle chart, including Khaled Hosseini's And The Mountains Echoed (Bloomsbury), currently at number two, George R R Martin's A Game of Thrones (HarperCollins) and Philippa Gregory's The White Queen (Simon & Schuster).
Peter Donaldson of Red Lion Books in Colchester commented: "I think it's very short-sighted for the trade generally to be selling any new, premium titles at this kind of price. It's madness. It's valuing a short-term gain over long-term stability."
