Indie publisher Alma Press has acquired its lead fiction titles for spring 2011, snapping up world rights to two novels.
Publisher Elisabetta Minervini bought world English rights to The Pink Hotel by Anna Stothard through Charlie Campbell at Ed Victor. The title, Stothard's second novel after 2004's Isabel and Rocco (Arrow), follows a 17-year-old as she searches for her identity, flying from London to LA for
her mother's funeral and spending the summer tracking down the men who knew her mother.
Minervini said: "I am truly excited to be publishing Anna's new book, which kept me totally hooked from beginning to end. Anna brims with talent, and has all the makings of a chart-topping writer."
Alma will publish in April 2011 as an £11.99 trade paperback.
The second acquisition, again by Minervini, is Two Cows and a Vanful of Smoke by Peter Benson. Minervini bought world rights directly from the author, and said: "From the very first page and sentence it was clear to me that I was reading one of the most original novels in years, written in a lucid, concise, funny, moving prose by a great storyteller and in a very unique voice."
It is Benson's first novel in over a decade, having previously written seven novels, which were published between 1987 and 1997. The new book is set in Somerset during the summer of 1976 and is described by the publisher as "a tragi-comedy, a cat-and-mouse tale and a murder mystery".
It will be published by Alma in June 2011 as a £12.99 trade paperback.
